Gede Ruins
The Gede Ruins are the remains of a once-prosperous Swahili town that mysteriously declined in the 17th century. Dating back to the 13th century, these atmospheric ruins feature the remains of a great mosque, a palace, and numerous houses built from coral stone. Located near Watamu, Gede provides a fascinating glimpse into Kenya's pre-colonial Swahili civilization, with its blend of African, Arabic, and Persian influences. The site is surrounded by sacred forest, home to golden-rumped elephant shrews and various bird species, adding to its mystical atmosphere.
